Junk? These hooks are way beyond the ones I've seen by local blacksmiths. That's a great design.
Kind of you to say that. Most unfortunately, many"local blacksmiths"are really dropping the ball, lately. It's hard to blame them, the public is not aware or discerning enough,or willing to pay what it's worth, either. So the quality of ironwork is slowly creeping towards the lowest common denominator-the Wal-Mart,where you can by a hand-forged hook for $1.98.
That's about it, yeah. It's a shame that the artistry is being lost, but at the very least there's smiths like you keeping the niche alive.
I can't blame people for not wanting to commit a financial suicide, the way i do,but the technique is getting more rare, and what a lot of people don't realise is that the joinery IS the aesthetics in ironwork.By compromising quality we not only rob the client of that innate value, but also lower their educational and taste levels,a slippery slope, shame and disrespect to the people and the material both...
these are beautiful...I agree about Wal-mart and mass produced crap, it's just not the same.

Thank you.I have a bad habit of over-categorising,and end up sounding like some foolish authority on everything...The truth is that Wal-Mart does reflect a lot of people's preferences,as objectionable as some may see it...And as unacceptable as those things are to me in guiding of the design of the ironwork,i should probably keep my mouth shut-i offend folks way too often, and nothing constructive have ever come out of that...But i'm glad to be seconded in some of it,thank you.
no you shouldn't keep your mouth shut. I think if they can't take the offense something is wrong with them, and besides that the age of Wal-Mart is not a good one if you look out how they conduct business and how warped current society is...anyways I'll stop my ranting.

Thank you,i'm glad someone else tends to rant on account of all this. It's actually a VERY complex matter, much has been said about it by some of the brightest folks. You're in school,so it might be easy for you to look up John Ashcroft on the subject of the Arts&Crafts mvmnt,William Morris, and, going back even further,John Ruskin. They all wrote about what the consequences of the industrial age are for the human creativity...i'm rattling...Very sorry to read about your mom, hope it all works out, much luck to you with everything.Jake.
hey, guess who's been making... hooks the whole day :D

where does the material for that leaf come from? just from the split stem? The sharp ones look awfully thin... or have you made the cut diagonally?
